In order to be granted asylum in Belgium an interrogation is held inside the offices of the General Commission for Refugees and Stateless Persons (CGVS) in Brussels. The interrogation is called Personal Maintenance. A Protection Officer is assigned to question the applicants' story, ultimately deciding whether or not he/she will get recognition and/or protection on Belgian territory. The interview takes about four hours to complete and is considered the most challenging part into acquiring a legal status in Belgium.
